People believed that slaves deserved no rights for themselves or freedom. From 1619 till 1865 the slaves had no rights till the 13th amendment had abolished the slavery in the United States. After the civil war Lincoln issued a preliminary emancipation proclamation that stated “Slaves within any State, or designated part of a State…in rebellion,…shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” Then during the period of the reconstruction the slaves received citizenship and equal protection and the right to vote.
